The Hastings College men's basketball team took on the Dordt Defenders tonight in the quarterfinals of the GPAC tournament. The team pulled out a win with a score of 106 to 101. The Broncos are the number 3 seed and the Defenders are seeded at 6.
According to head coach Lance Creech, the first win the in the GPAC tournament is always the toughest to get. About the game Creech said, "I thought the first 25 minutes were great, we played some good defense."
The coach went on to say that he did not expect Dordt to come back as close as they did. The Broncos led 44-25 at the half but were outscored 76-62 in the second half.
With just 2 minutes 32 seconds left on the clock the Broncos led 88-76. However, after the Broncos missed a series of free throws, the game took a turn in favor of the Defenders.
Overall the Broncos shot 36-64 from the field for the game while the Defenders shot 32-77. Senior Waid Vontz led the team with 22 points. Vontz was 7 for 10 from the line. Senior Kylor Dossett followed with 21 points. Junior Derek Fletcher and Senior Jeremiah Slough added 16 points each. Fletcher let the team with 9 rebounds.
Saturday the Broncos travel to Sioux Falls to face the number 2 seed University of Sioux Falls Cougars in the semifinals of the GPAC tournament. Coach Creech anticipates that the game to be tough, but within the Broncos' reach.
"Sioux Falls is a big physical team, in order to win we will need to maintain our aggressiveness," he said.
