Senior Jeremiah Slough led all scorers with 26 points and three others scored in double-digits as the 20th-ranked Hastings College men's basketball team beat Doane College 99-71.
The Broncos took the lead early and used a quality shooting night to expand the lead. HC shot 55 percent from the floor and went 10-for-12 from the free throw line.
Junior Derek Fletcher scored 20 points in a team high 31 minutes. He also added four assists and three steals.
Senior Brent McNurlin didn't miss as shot all night. He finished with 17 points and went a perfect six-for-six from the field including three three-pointers. McNurlin had three assists as well.
Senior Waid Vontz led the team with six rebounds, including three offensive. Vontz also chipped in with 10 points, but didnt shoot as well last night as in recent games. Vontz went only 4-for-15 from the field.
HC is now on a six game win streak and has used an explosive offensive performance to help carry the team. HC has scored 89 points or more in each of its last five games including a 129-point performance against Midland Lutheran.
Hastings' defense held Doane to only 32 points in the second half and 40 percent shooting. HC also forced 16 Tiger turnovers and blocked four shots.
The large Bronco lead allowed the team to rest its starters and get some of the younger players minutes. Freshman Dane Bacon had five points in 13 minutes of play and Sophomore Nate Olson added two in 12.
The Broncos (21-5 Overall, 12-3 GPAC) are second in the conference, a game and a half behind Dakota Wesleyan at 14-2. HC hosts Northwestern (14-11, 9-6) Saturday.
Northwestern is currently sixth in conference standings and have won three straight games, including a 73-71 win over Morningside yesterday.
HC averages 83 points per game compared to Northwestern's 85, but HC only gives up 70 points per game. Northwestern allows over 81.
Offensively both teams match up evenly. NW and HC both have three scorers each who average double-digits. Both teams shoot 47 percent from the field.
The Broncos will have the advantage of playing at home. This is the final regular season home game for the Bronco seniors. The Broncos have lost only one game at home this season, a 74-80 loss to the 16th-ranked University of Sioux Falls.
Tip-off for Saturday is set for 4 p.m.
