The HC Bronco men's basketball team moved up to second in the GPAC standings Saturday with a 96-81 win over Briar Cliff.

Senior Jeremiah Slough, GPAC and National player of the week, continued his strong play with 22 first half points. He ended the game with a team high 26.

Senior Waid Vontz and Junior Derek Fletcher added high scoring performances. Vontz added 22 points on the night and Fletcher scored 18, all of which came in the second half.

Both team's offenses shot well from the floor. Briar Cliff connected on 48 percent of their shots and Hastings hit nearly 54 percent.

Senior Kylor Dossett continues to play well and be the scrappy leader for the Broncos. Dossett led the team with 11 rebounds. This is the second straight game Dossett has led the team in boards.

The Broncos took a five point lead into the half, 48-43, and continued to keep the Charger defense on its heals in the second half. Hastings won the free throw category going 18-for-20 compared to BCU's 6-for-13.

For every BCU score, it seemed as if Hastings had an answer. Every Charger two turned into a Bronco three-pointer, which helped the Broncos increase their second half lead.

Vontz killed all hopes at a BCU comeback midway through the second half. After a Briar Cliff three-pointer cut the Bronco lead to single digits, Vontz hit a three from the wing and got fouled on the box-out. Vontz converted the four-point play and squandered the Charger hopes of a comeback.

Chase Vander Feen led all Charger scorers with 18 points. BCU's leading scorer this season Kyle Semprini was held in check going 2-9 from the floor for only six points.

HC has now won five straight and 17 out of its last 18 games. The Broncos trail GPAC leader Dakota Wesleyan by a 1.5 games in the standings with four conference matchups left, including the season finale at DWU.

Dakota Wesleyan has won ten straight games and are currently ranked 11th in the country.

The Broncos (20-5, 11-3 GPAC) will be back in action Wednesday at Lynn Farrell Arena as they play host to Doane College (5-17, 4-10 GPAC). BCU will host 19th ranked Sioux Falls on Wednesday.
