Winners of the National Barbershop Quartet Chorus, Back in Business, made a guest performance.
Chorus of the Plains barbershop singers sponsored the event.
According to conductor of the Men's Chorus, Dr. Charles Smith, the event is a worthwhile occasion. "Young Men in Harmony is a terrific opportunity provided by the Chorus of the Plains for high school students and our college students. It's also a great free concert for the community," Smith said.
Young men traveled from all over the state of Nebraska to take part in the workshop and concert.
Yesterday afternoon, the high school students learned and practiced barbershop music and other choral literature to perform at the concert last night.
Dr. Robin Koozer also viewed the event as beneficial. "Any opportunity to encourage young men to sing is a very worthwhile undertaking," Koozer said.
Koozer is also one of the faculty sponsors for the group 1-2-5, a student music ensemble. Along with Dr. Fritz Mountford, and Aaron Rouse from the HC foundation, Koozer recently accompanied the group on a "mini tour," as Koozer put it.
On behalf of the HC Music Department, 1-2-5 performed at six different high schools including: Aurora, Waverly, Bennington, Omaha South, Papillion-LaVista, and Papillion-LaVista South. The ensemble also performed at First Presbyterian Church in Bellevue and at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Mo.
However, 1-2-5's main focus was on its participation in the International Championship of Collegiate A Capella Quarterfinals.
The event took place on Saturday February 20 at the Missouri State University Plaster Student Union. The members of 1-2-5 that represented HC at the competition are as follows: Dustin Kerr, Josh Wooster, Benjamin Pettiford, Sean Anders, Noah Elmshaeuser, Ben Veilleux, Kyle Bell, Thomas Mahoney, and Zach Maurer. According to Koozer, 1-2-5 was established when HC celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2007. The ensemble 1-2-5 is under student leadership and members of the group arrange the majority of the music the group performs.
