Iowa teams head into quarterfinals

The NAIA National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa is home to 32 college basketball teams for a week during March. Some teams leave behind the California sunshine or the 70 degree Florida weather to travel to Iowas melting snow piles, which has left everything soaking wet.

Other teams call Iowa, and all of the snow that still sits in heaps in front yards and parking lots, home. Four of the eight teams who remained at the start of the quarterfinals are from Iowa. Grand View University, Northwestern College, Iowa Wesleyan College and Briar Cliff College represent Iowa at the tournament.

Grand View and Iowa Wesleyan were knocked out of the tournament after their matchups this afternoon. Grand View lost, 55-75, to Shawnee State University and Iowa Wesleyan fell to Northwestern College 89-72.

Grand View and Iowa Wesleyan are members of the Midwest Collegiate Conference, which is made up of nine teams. Eight of these teams are from Iowa, only Viterbo University from Wisconsin is not.

Grand View finished its regular season second in the MCC and Iowa Wesleyan claimed the conference title. The teams played each other twice during the regular season and Iowa Wesleyan walked away with a win each time.

Northwestern advances to the semifinals on Monday night to play the winner of the Briar Cliff and Cardinal Stritch University game.

Northwestern is a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference and ended its conference season 15-3. The Red Raiders were defeated by Briar Cliff, Morningside College and Hastings College.

Earl Woudstra, Northwestern head coach, won his 350th game over Dakota Wesleyan University on Feb. 17 and senior Randa Hulstein was ranked ninth in rebounding and fifth in blocked shots heading into the tournament.

Northwestern freshman Kendra DeJong likes the home advantage. It helps a lot, she said. It shows that a lot of fans are behind us.

The close proximity makes it easier for spectators to attend the games at the event center. DeJong hoped for a big crowd during their afternoon game and victory over Iowa Wesleyan 89-72.

Briar Cliff, from Sioux City, will play Cardinal Stritch tonight at 8 p.m. The team is also a member of the GPAC and finished third this year. This was the Chargers highest ever finish.

Mike Power, head coach, grabbed his 300th collegiate coaching victory on Jan. 23. At one point, Briar Cliff was ranked fourth in NAIA ratings.

Shawnee State, Indiana Wesleyan University, College of the Ozarks and Cardinal Stritch traveled from states outside Iowa to be at the tournament.
