SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- No. 1 seed Northwestern College defeated No. 8 Indiana University Northwest Thursday during the first round of the NAIA National Tournament, 47-100.
The Northwestern Red Raiders were lead by sophomore Val Kleinjan and freshman Kendra De Jong. Kleinjan ended the game with 17 points and De Jong followed with 12 points.
Teammate and freshman Thea Engen pulled down nine rebounds, as did senior Randa Hulstein.
Although Northwest closed the lead within five points halfway through the first half, the Red Raiders pulled away to seal the win with a 53-point lead.
The Red Hawks leading scorers were sophomore Sharon Houston with 26 points and freshman Ish Shah Terry with seven points. Houston also grabbed nine rebounds and sophomore Jenelle Kapelinski had seven rebounds.
Northwestern will move to the second round and play No. 4 seed Sterling tomorrow at 1:45 p.m. Northwest ends its season 22-10.
