SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- First round tournament action continued today as the the No. 13 Iowa Wesleyan Tigers defeated the #24 Walsh Cavaliers 79-68.
Iowa scored first with a layup by Jill Ginder. Wesleyan's Kayla Kovack soon hit a 10-footer, evening the score at four. Walsh responded with Leah Seaman and Katie Berry hitting back to back 3 pointers, giving them a 10-4 advantage.
Walsh held on to the lead until Jessi Beachy converted a field goal to give Iowa a 21-20 lead with 6:11 left in the first half. Iowa added to its lead with two consecutive steals that resulted in easy layups, taking a 25-20 lead over Walsh.
Two minutes later, Anna Jones hit two free throws that extended Iowa's lead to eight, 30-22. Walsh's Jessie Miller managed to hit a layup in the final seconds of the half, cutting the lead to six, 34-28.
Walsh came out with fire in the second half, putting together an 8-0 run to retake the lead at 36-34. The teams battled back and forth when Ginder hit two free throws, giving Wesleyan a 48-40 lead with 12:16 remaining in the game.
The Cavaliers continued to pull away as Melanie McCreight hit a breakaway layup with 1:23 remaining in the second half, giving them a 77-64.
Jones led the Tiger's with 21 points, followed by Ginder with 19 and Beachey with 15. For the Cavaliers, Cara Bedard finished with 14 points, and Miller had 10.
Iowa Wesleyan will play Friday at 10:15 a. m. against Jamestown College at the Tyson Events Center.
