SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- In a battle between two conference champions, the Jamestown College Jimmies defeated Indiana University Southeast 65-58 during the first round of the NAIA Division II Women's National Tournament at the Tyson Events Center.
The victory was the Jimmies' first-ever win at the tournament. Last year, the Jimmies fell to Huntington University 64-54, and in 2000 the team lost to South Dakota Tech 74-64. Jamestown, who is making its third tournament appearance, led the Grenadiers 33-25 at halftime.
The Jimmies extended their lead to 10 points midway through the second half, but Indiana Southeast tied the game 55-55 with two minutes remaining. Jamestown junior Jackie Hust worked the ball into the paint to score a basket in the low post, giving the Jimmies a four-point lead, 59-55, with 59 seconds left in the game.
Indiana Southeast, which won the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, shot 30 percent from the field in the first half. The team went 3-of-7 from 3-point range. Senior Giuli Varriano led Jamestown with 16 points. Senior Cori Doubek added 14 points. Each had six rebounds. Southeast freshman Ashmere Woods led all scorers with 18 points.
With the win, Jamestown, which entered the tournament as a No. 2 seed, improves to 26-6 on the season. Indiana Southeast's season came to a close with a record of 23-9.
The Jimmies will play the winner of the Iowa Wesleyan-Walsh University game tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. in the second round of the tournament.
